Probably best to use the current rules if we're going to use the current army builder.
That all sounds good to me.

Re: June 26 Open Gaming
Hey Karl,
I have a rules question for you. In Age of Fantasy it says that, you may combine two copies of
the same unit into a single big unit, as long as any upgrades that are applied to all models are bought for both. So for instance both units must be armed with the same weapon such as swords. Do you think this also affects Command Group upgrades? Each unit may only have one of each of the following upgrades. Sergeant: One model gets +1 to hit when shooting or in melee (pick one), Musician / Battle Standard: Always counts as having dealt +1 wound for seeing who won melee.
I have four units of chaos warriors, 5 in each group. I have two sets of sergeants, musicians and battle standards. Can I combine two units if one has the command upgrades and the other doesn’t? It seems funny that to combine the two groups they both need to have the command upgrade, then the new unit would have doubles of sergeants, musicians and standards. Let me know what you think.
Thanks,
Michael

I'm not totally sure.
I can see where it would feel weird to buy it twice, but I assume you have to pay twice in order to be paying full price for having the upgrade for twice as many figures.

I actually don't think this applies to command groups. The text states, as you note, that units may be combined "as long as any upgrades that are applied to all models are bought for both". The command upgrades apply to only one model apiece, so are not "applied to all models". Giving the unit halberds, for instance, would be a case of an upgrade that applies to all models, so you would have to buy that upgrade for each unit in the combined unit.
In other words, if you have two 5-model units:
- you can upgrade one with a sergeant and a banner but not the other, and combine them to make a 10-model unit with one sergeant and one banner.
- You cannot, however, upgrade one unit with halberds and leave one with hand-weapons and then combine them. You would have to buy the halberd upgrade for both 5-model units.
EDIT: Poking around on army forge, it is, in fact, impossible to buy the sergeant/banner upgrades for the second unit in a combined unit--they only let you pay for that upgrade once. Whereas if you buy a weapons upgrade for either unit in the combined unit, it automatically buys it for the other unit as well. I take this to confirm my interpretation of the rules above.

Hi Mattias,
Thank you for your input. Since they don’t allow you to add a second standard and sergeant in the app it would appear that you do not need to add them when combining two units. We may need to send an email to the One Page Rules people to get confirmation on this.

I think you guys are right. I tested it in the unit builder and when you "combine" a unit it doesn't double the command upgrades the way it does for other upgrades.
